When I am working at the weekend, I like to take what I often refer to as a ‘micro break’. This is a tiny break that takes no more than one or two hours. It helps dissolve any resentment about weekend working and adds a touch of joy to what would have otherwise been long day. Last Saturday, I had a very early start and by mid-afternoon was ready to escape for a much needed joy top up. When I have lots to do, I find having a treat to anticipate really does drive me onwards. The change of scene also enables me to return to my work refreshed.
On this occasion, my fiancé suggested that we go a Garden Barn Home and Garden Store in Cotesbach. It is the perfect place to enjoy a hot chocolate, a cappuccino or a slice of deliciously moist Victoria sponge cake. The wood burner was going full tilt and it felt very indulgent to just sit and relax, sipping a creamy hot chocolate and flicking through the abundant supply of magazines available for café customers.
The Garden Barn has an eclectic range of treasures for the home and garden. Outside there are unusual plants, statues, sculptures and garden ornaments including original Victorian chimney pots. Inside there are an interesting array of cards and gifts to suit all pockets. Taking half an hour to browse helped me to relax and helped me return to my work with renewed vigour and creativity.
When things quieten down, I plan to research a whole series of local micro break opportunities. Not just cafes and shops, but restorative, inspiring jaunts that are no more than 20 minutes from home.
