I like to live frugally. I don’t mean that I am constantly scrimping and saving but I would rather splurge on one luxurious meal than fritter my money away on numerous incidentals.
If you go out for the day, without planning ahead, it’s easy to waste money buying drinks and sandwiches that can be pretty indifferent. After the expense of Christmas, we were keen to have a nice Sunday afternoon out without any unnecessary expense. Instead of eating at home, we made our sandwiches, packed some fruit and a flask and headed out to a local reservoir. We parked up and ate our lunch enjoying the beautiful view before our long walk.
If you are watching your expenditure, it is such fun to plan ahead and take a delicious picnic or snack with you. I have always invested in the prettiest of picnic ware, floral melamine plates, gorgeous Japanese style bento boxes and hand embroidered napkins bought for a few pennies at car boot sales. These little touches always make me feel as if I am having a big treat.
My tip for using a thermos flask is to avoid making your coffee or tea in advance. Instead just fill it with hot water and make up your drink of choice just before you want your drink. In this way, you avoid that slightly rancid taste that so often accompanies a brew from a flask.
